Hard, painful week

WOW,
between the weird weather changes, and the fact that I am working out more this week(more like 30-60 minutes a day), my fibromyalgia has flared up so bad that I can hardly move!! I feel better knowing that I am exercising more, sleeping better, and losing weight, but I hurt!:(
Hopefully by body will get used to it, or at least I can find something to help the pain. Any suggestions would be great!!

need a cheat day

I'm having a real good week so far. I am definitely looking forward to the weekend however cause I saved up some good treats from the neighbors in the freezer.

Interesting!

So I noticed something that's like an ah-hah moment for me even though it may seem like common sense to you all. ha ha. So, today I used my free day to eat whatever because I had a potluck at school and wanted to be able to try a bunch of different dishes-good or bad for me. ha ha. I noticed that from "training" my body with good healthy foods that once I ate most the fatty and sugary stuff today, by the end of the afternoon I felt SO sick! My body totally was not liking it whatsoever and felt like it was rejecting the food pretty fast. I guess I've learned my lesson- don't over do it! (But I am happy to say that I could notice a difference in how I felt when I ate certain foods!)
Hello all! I am a most likely for Friday night. My mom is on a cruise so I know she is a no :) But I will let you know asap for me :)

Are you getting enough protein?

If you are doing any exercises to build muscle, make sure you are eating enough protein. I usally consume 50-75g of protein per day when I am doing strength training.

Recipe & RSVP

I can come to the gathering on Friday night, but can't stay long - hubby's in the Tabernacle Choir, and I'm not seeing much of him this week due to conference this weekend. But I'll be there! It'll be fun to meet all you guys.

And Lori, for you, here's the Weight Watcher's Butternut Squash Soup recipe:

2 Tbsp. butter (you heard me)
1/2 c. chopped onion
1 golden delicious apple, peeled, cored and diced (I do 2)
2 tsp. grated fresh ginger (can used dried, but less)
6 c. low-sodium nonfat chicken broth
2 small butternut squash, peeled, halved, seeded and cut into bite-size pieces
salt & pepper to taste

In a medium stockpot, combine butter, onions, and apple pieces. Cook on medium for 5 minutes. Add ginger, broth, and squash and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 25 minutes. Stir in salt and pepper.
Let soup cool slightly, and working in batches, puree in a blender until smooth. Return pureed soup to cooking pot and bring to simmer. Serve with a dab of low-fat sour cream and fresh herbs. (it also tastes great with toasted pumpkin seeds) Serves 8. Per serving: 70 calories, 3 g. protein, 7 g. carbohydrates, 2 g. fiber, 5 g. fat, 3 g. saturated fat, 113 mg. sodium, 12 mg. cholesterol.

Friday

I will be there. Maybe a few minutes late. My mother in law is having all the grandkids over to dye eggs at 5. I like putting names with faces!! so this will be fun :)

OOOPS...Almost forgot

Nothing like the last minute!! Here is to the end of week 3! It has been a long one. Hope everyone had a good week.
Today was pretty swell! I'm excited to use my free day tomorrow because I am having a potluck at my school and wanted to be able to eat what I wanted. Woo hoo!

Friday at 7:00

We will be getting together Friday night at my house at 7:00. My address is 2474 E. 3900 So. I am so excited to meet everybody! If anyone would like to bring any healthy snacks that would be great! I might just cook up a little something yummy to try to tempt my opponents! ( if you only knew me and my cooking you would know that would not be much of a temptation)

Spring Break

Lori I have to agree. When my kids are here all day I get side tracked to easily and routine goes out the window.

struggling

Wow I am struggling the last 3 days. I have lost all motivation. It doesn't help that the kids are home on spring break and screwing up my routine.... Can I survive the rest of the week?? I hope. this is certainly not a perfect week. thank goodness i still have 5 left.

Ummm...

"The sun is shining, the tank is clean... the tank is clean!"
Couldn't think of anything and this movie line came in my head
somedays I wonder why I work in Childcare...... I am over stressed with 20 kids and underpaid and just when I think I've had enough........ I have a child who walks up and says " Miss Kris will you give me a hug? I am sad and you are the only one who will hug me when I am sad." That is when I remember why I am in Childcare.......

Yummy Lunch

Butternut squash soup - and a weight watcher's recipe!
YUM.

Good Reminder

"It would make sense to stop eating [when you are trying to lose weight], but it actually works in the opposite way," says Kimberly Lummus, MS, RD, Texas Dietetic Association media representative and public relations coordinator at the Austin Dietetic Association in Austin, Texas.

Calories and Your Health

The most effective way to lose weight is to consume fewer calories than you expend, creating a calorie deficit. But if your calorie intake dips too low, says Lummus, your body could go into starvation mode. "Your body will start to store fat because it thinks it is not going to get anything," says Lummus. "You will be at a point where your body is kind of at a standstill."

Thank heavens the day is over!!!

I knew PMS would get to me sooner or later!!! This was one rough day to try to care about food and water when i don't want to care about anything. It really helps to read all of the positive blogs. Hoping for an easier day tomorrow!

Dear Mom......

I hope you are enjoying your cruise....... you better be eating good and running or walking laps around the ship....... oh ya don't forget to have one piece of that choc. cake but thats all!
I hope everyone is doing well!

SUGAR COMA

I FINALLY took a legit day off. I might not have eaten ANYTHING but sugar. Think I'm kidding? Orange rolls, ice cream, cookies, cupcakes, oreos, chocolate kisses, cadbury eggs... I kinda hoped it would make me sick so I wouldnt keep craving it. No such luck. It felt great! Just another reason I love Sundays!

my vote

Lori I agree with your blog about Laureen's situation. And if any one is worried about her being alone I can vouch for her honesty and integrity. Hope everyone had a good weekend. And I would love to meet everyone, in response to your blog Jodi.

How about Friday?

Who would like to get together Friday night? Let me know ASAP so i can make arrangements. Thanks!

Toughin it out!

Wow, what a hard few days I have had. Trying to workout with fevers over a hundred, chills and neck and back aches like no other. Thank goodness for a supportive partner. Remember when your brain is cooking at 102 degrees, have someone else read prescription orders to you. For the first 3 days I have not been taking my meds right...hello!!! So, feeling a little better today, first day in 6 days because I had the nurse tell me the right dosage. WOW!!! Hopefully the rest of this week goes better. Good luck to everyone!

The weekend!

Had quite the awesome weekend and am hoping the rest of my week goes just as smooth!
What a day! I got my menu done for the week, my workouts planned for the week, an hour on my Walker and 30 mins on the Total Body Gym. Now I am going to sit back and watch Ruby. She is so funny and she is a great person to show how hard you have to work to get the weight off. Not only that but she shows that you have to change your lifestyle from the inside out. Anyone who has not seen this show..... you should watch it :)

Checking In

Nothing to report. Still coughing.

super easy recipes that are good for you

Ok, this first one, don't be turned off. If we all get together as a group, I will bring these brownies for you to try.

Chocolate Bean Brownies (don't let the name turn you off!)
1 box of brownie mix - for a 13x9 pan
1 15oz can of black beans
1 15oz can of water
Pam

Rince off the beans with cold water really good. Puree the beans really good - it will be very thick. Scoop the pureed beans in with the brownie mix. Do not put in the ingredients that the brownie mix calls for - just what you see above. Rince out the can that the beans came in, and fill with water. Pour the water in with the bean puree and brownie mix. Mix really well. It will look very soupy - this is normal. Pour the mixture into a 13x9 cake pan that has been sprayed with pam. Cook according to the brownie mix directions. Enjoy :). These are full of fiber, so if you plan to have more than a couple, you will need to drink quite a bit of water, else, ... well you get the picture :).

Baked Salsa/Green Chile Chicken
medium jar of any salsa you choose - pace is always on sale, I use that
4-5 frozen chicken breasts - skinless boneless
15 oz can of green chile - any brand

Pour all of the salsa into a 13x9 cake pan, layer on the chicken breasts on top of the salsa, pour all of the green chile on top of the chicken. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Take out the pan and sprinkle on low fat ched cheese, I don't do this, but my kids love it! Bake an additional 10 minutes and it is done. My kids love this and I serve it for them on top of spanish rice and with tortilla chips. I love it on top of a salad because I use the salsa/green chile mix as my dressing. I put in black beans, red peppers, and tomatoes in my salad and it is really good and healthy.

Each of these recipes my kids love and it helps me so I don't have to make additional supper for them and for me, we all get to eat the same thing :).

EVERYONE PLEASE READ:

I think that most of us voted to keep Laureen with us! She is a very motivated lady and we feel it is not her fault that her partnership broke up. Jodi suggested that because she would have only received 1/2 the money if she would have won, that if she wins we would give her half and give the other half to the 2nd place team to split. How does everyone feel about that? Are there any other ideas? We really would like to receive input from everyone in the game. so if you could please ALL comment on your vote/suggestion by the end of tomorrow that would be great so we can let this poor soul know what her outcome is!!! Thanks so much!

Easter Candy

Why is it that at Easter they sell ALL the yummiest candy?! Tonight I went from store to store trying to find those coveted Cadbury eggs. I finally found some and made my stock so that once this game was over I could enjoy them!

Let's get together

Me and Lori were talking about getting together on some evening as a group to meet each other and also I talked to Janna about telling us about her amazing weight loss. She is willing to come tell us about her success and maybe give us pointers how to lose weight the healthy way like she did. Please let us know what night would work for all of you that would be interested in coming.

Checking In

nothing to report
Such a nice day today! My knees aren't in great shape so walking on the hard ground is hard for me so........................... I moved my "Walking Machine" in front of the window opened it up and pretended to be outside walking! Too bad my view was the freeway wall....... Oh Sad :( ha ha ha

Here's to Week 3

Checking in. Just want to STOP. COUGHING. I'm ready to go. Ready to stay the course, if I'm still sick, and PUSH if I'm not. Hope everybody's learning some good healthy habits. I've learned:

Fruits and vegetables should be the star of every meal/snack. Build around THAT, and you'll get enough. If I do, I really don't crave sweets the same.

A free day and a free meal a week is gosh-a-plenty. That's PLENTY of indulgence for your body to be reminded, "See? How we don't like it when you let the tongue be in charge?" The tongue is having a total toga party, for sure, but the rest of the body is going, "Oh no!" I really, really look forward to the day/meal off, and I actually equally look forward to getting back to good whole food.

There aren't many days we can't find 20 minutes to exercise if it's a priority. To get points for it made it a BIG priority, even when I've been coughing my guts out the past two weeks. I only got 20 minutes in, and I was exhausted afterwards, but I DID IT. This is a good thing to learn.

I want to eat/exercise/LIVE in such a way in the next six weeks that I can just continue AFTER the six weeks, for the rest of my life. If it's something I can't maintain day in, day out, then what is the point?

Good luck everybody! Whether I'm voted off the island or not, I'm getting a perfect score for the next six weeks, and beyond. I made this commitment to myself FOR myself, so I'll be doing this for the long haul - hope you are too!

Whats Up??

Some of you may not know me, however, I feel the need to comment on your game. I started THIS BLOG along with my family a few months ago when we played the game. I have played the game for 10 weeks and consider myself a "veteran" Game On player.
I feel like I have a perspective that may (OR MAY NOT DEPENDING ON YOUR ATTITUDE) be helpful. I have been following your game and it seems that too many of you are getting caught up in the drama of the scale. I understand the desire to lose weight and see it reflected on the scale. I learned after about 6 weeks of playing that when I based my happiness on the number on the scale, I was usually disappointed. So many things affect the number, that if you weigh yourself everyday, you are just asking for trouble. I now weigh myself one time a week, on friday morning. Whatever the number is... that's what it is. It doesn't define me or even how hard I worked out. I try to keep my perspective LONG TERM. Am I going in the right direction? Am I doing my best? Am I being honest with myself? If I have made good food decisions and have worked out then I consider it a good week, even if I didn't lose as much on the scale as I hoped to. After 2 1/2 months of playing this game I have lost 9 pounds- some of you may not see that as a big deal. However, you look at it from a different perspective- I have also lost several inches, dropped a pants size, gained 5 pounds of lean muscle mass and feel healthier than I ever have in my life. I am better than I would have been had I not made a commitment to myself to play this game and do my best. I absolutely love this game and plan on playing for many more weeks. However, I play on playing with people who are positive and who are accountable to themselves first, who don't make excuses and who are doing it for the right reason. I never once was motivated by the money- I looked at it completely different. It was a fun way to communicate with my family and get healthier. My advice to you is to put things in perspective--this is not a game about who can lose the most in a day or a week or even in a month. It is a game that is supposed to be FUN and supposed to help you gain a healthier lifestyle. It is a game about making good choices as often as you can. It is about supporting others in their journey but more importantly being ACCOUNTABLE TO YOURSELF. I would suggest you each play for yourselves... of course, you should want to do well for your partner, but it is YOUR LIFE! IT IS YOUR BODY! You need to decide to take control of it yourself, for yourself. And in taking control, you will be less inclined to worry about others and what their score is, what their weight is, what they ate for lunch. Worry about yourself.

I also wanted to point out that it is alot of work to get a blog started and to initiate a game, especially with a big group of people. It is very time-consuming and stressful to have people not take it seriously or to constantly be needing clarification of rules that are clearly posted. I am sure most of you are taking this seriously, but when you are taking the game seriously and trying to do your best, and others aren't, it can be very frustrating.

I hope there can be more positive energy and more of the great posts about "feeling better", and players feeling happy with themselves for their hard work and determination. It is so much better to try to be positive than to always tell yourself "it is too hard" or "i can't do it" or "it is not fair". Decide that you can do it and that the scale may not always say what you want it to say, but you need to decide that it is about more than your weight. It is about how you feel and how proud you can be of yourself when you finish a hard workout or pass up a fattening dessert. Play for your life, not for the money. And quit weighing yourself everyday, for heaven's sake, you will make yourself CRAZY!

I want you to know that part of the reason I feel so passionate about this is because I know it works. My family group that I played with a few months ago lost over 80 pounds in the 2 months that we played. I have talked about this game with a friend of mine, who will be featuring me and this game on her blog in a few weeks. She will be directing her followers to the blogs that I have started and this is one of them. I want her followers to get a true picture of this game -- healthier choices, more working out, more water, more sleep, better decisions, etc.. I hope that they can see, through your posts, that this is fun and weight loss is possible.

To those of your who are fully committed, BRAVO! You will be so proud of yourself at the end of these 8 weeks! I know it is hard and life sucks at times. But, you can control your life, if YOU are willing to make it a priority. Good Luck to you all!

Apoligies if needed

I'm sorry if i offended anybody in my voting blog. (Tiff and Laureen) but I just feel very passionate about not quitting. We all have days that make us want to quit. (health problems, depression, anxiety, stress, marital problems, hormonal changes due to new babies or the lovely menopause, stress of not having a job, stress of working too many hours and trying to take care of several kids, thyroid imbalances, bad knees, bad feet, bad back, grey hair (where did that come from?) finding a possible melanoma right next to your pee pee hole and not knowing how to go about showing someone, sleep disorders, finals................ did i miss anything?

She With No Partner

Totals this week: 760

If I can do this when I'm sick, I can do this.

Total loss: 7.4 lbs.

My vote

I think it would be awesome if she wants to be her own team, i'm sure she'd do a great job!

MY VOTE IS......

I think Laureen can be by herself for the remainder of the time but if she is the winner, i think she should get half the $ and the other half is divided between the runner up team.

Scale News

Really???
Anthony: 710
Tiffany: 710

Team: 1420

I too hated the scale this week. I had my 1% on tue and even yesterday, but not today :( I worked hard this week, so I was surprised with the scale this morning. Even if the scale doesn't reflect my hard work I have noticed I am gaining muscle definition and loosing inches :)

Vote

We have had a situation come up and I need everyone's opinion on the following: team tiffany and laureen is no longer. Tiff had to drop out because she did not understand the rules from the beginning and she said it is physically impossible for her to lose her 1% every week and she does not want to bring Laureen down. How does everyone feel about Laureen being her own team? Please respond ASAP so we can figure out what to do. Thanks so much!

Made it! barely...

So I made my weight under by .2. That was scary! I wanted to throw my scale through the wall yesterday ,but thank heavens I made it score 758 Had to take-2 for weighing two extra times because I was so afraid I wasn't going to make it AHHH!

Hi everyone

A little about myself. I'm Trudy Schmidt and I'm a gym mom, soccer mom and another mom to a child who just likes to have fun. I've been married for 22 years in July. My kids are 14 (next Tuesday), 10 and 7. I don't blog to communicate because I have good friends that are gym moms to communicate with, I'll try to blog more. It really has been fun reading everyone's blogs, some really good ideas! I love the Biggest Loser comment of Last Chance Workout - I'm a big fan. I've been structuring my eating and workouts with the Biggest Loser in mind. They are so motivating. I FEEL so much lighter than the scale says.

Thanks all for the competition. Janna and Jodi are giving us a run for our money (literally). I increased my fiber this week and it showed on the scale this week (thanks Michele). Our scores this week are: Jodi 760 and Trudy 760. Couldn't have asked for a better week. Shows that hard, consistant work pays off. I'm so proud of all of you -- keep up the good work.

Belly Dancing

I went to my belly dancing class work-out tonight! It was amazing as always and we learned a couple new moves. Now hopefully I can successfully get them down so next class I don't feel retarded!

Good luck!

Remember all, weigh yourself in the morning, add up all your amazing points and blog them by noon. I wish everyone the best of luck on that blasted SCALE!

Hey Janna!!!

Will you please call my cell phone 801-450-0652. I thought i saved your number somewhere but i can't find it. We need to talk

Down in the dumps!!

As you can see, Keith is not real big on words! He did need to get his communication in though!
I am real sick today, and have been sleeping all day! I worked for 5 of my 13 hour shift today, then they cancelled me for the rest of the shift, and I was so happy, because I woke up sooo miserable.
I worked out for 2 1/2 hours yesterday, and maybe overdid it? So now I need to get my butt in gear and do my workout for today!!
I am hoping for a good weigh in tomorrow.
Keith Says: week 2 down, and counting!

Did you do your....

"Last chance workout".... I did... I worked my butt off today! Hoping for a good weight-in

Week 2

A good week with a good score. But being sick, I feel like my body has just....shut down. I wonder how many calories coughing burns? Cause it feels like a marathon.

Scale is a swear word

I weighed my self yesterday and was below my 1% and then this morning I was up a pound so I ran extra and lifted for 45 min. Then I weighed again (-1) sorry Lori and I was down half a pound. It is so upsetting when your working your butt off and eating rabbit food(celery, lettuce etc...) and still struggling for 1% BAH!!! Hope the scale likes me in the morning!

Just another benefit of this lifestyle?

Found this article interesting!

Cold Yoga

I do Bikram Yoga, and usually the room temp is somewhere between 105-115 degrees. I typically sweat a gallon...and that may not be an exaggeration. Today though, the room was the coolest I've ever been in, don't know the exact temp, but I hardly broke a sweat. What fun to have a new experience. I am sure when the studio re-opens after their remodeling this weekend, it will be back to normal. BTW, if any of you are interested in trying it, the studio offers a free session, at 10:00am every first Saturday of the month. Namaste :)

Yuck!

O.k. i did my fast walking this morning for an hour and my 20 minute ab work out. Why do I always feel so yucky after working out. I want to go crawl into bed. I thought it was supposed to energize you. Well, it just wipes me out for the day, and my feet just kill after walking. I can barely get out of bed in the morning. I sure hope this changes, it is really hard to work out when it makes you feel worse :(

About Janna

Hello all.

I'm Janna, friend to Jodi E. I'm 30 and single. Just bought a house in Centerville where I live with my dog Petite. In the past two years, I have lost over 130lbs the HARD way. The last six months I have been trying to get to 120lbs, which I'm told is my ideal body weight. I don't know if it is but I REALLY want to get there to see if it is.

Last year I got laid off from GE and was able to start running and biking . . . and then did a triathlon. Got a job six months ago and got laid off from it today. I have to admit, I'm a little excited. I was able to do so much last time, I can't wait to see what I do this time. I'm thinking marathon, maybe.

Meet Tiffany

I don't know if I should admit this but am the partner and spouse of Anthony. (read below if you haven't yet) We have been married for almost 4 years. I am a stay at home mom for the now 4 children living at home. This past year we went from one child (daughter almost 3) at home to FOUR! (talk about stress!) We got custody of Anthony's sons (age 7 and almost 9) and we had our 2nd daughter (4 months). I am playing to lose weight, get healthy and have a stress release! Jodi & Brad are in our ward.

Anthony

I am a person short in stature (I'm talking Sam Wise Hobbity fresh short... Sam Wise was my call sign in special forces) I like long walks on the beach, rainbows and Unicorns. I am a father of five gorgeous Bridge Trolls... (billy goats beware) I am married to Super model Tiffany Wick who cage fights for money on the week ends. I am going to win this Shizzle so you might as well drop out now. Ok really, I was in the military for 10 1/2 years, broke my neck and became a Jabba the Hut when I was lazy and recovering. My Doc said if I don't do something I'm going to die..

The Connection

I am a friend and neighbor of Lori, Tiffany and Laureen who I love dearly. I am a mother of three, 8 year old and 4 year old daughters and 10 month old son. I've always loved excercising, but kid #3 sent me for a loop. I've got fat in places I've never had it before. Yuck!! I am so grateful for the motivation and dicipline of this game. I am extremely competitive. I love a challenge. I love to read, scrapbook and I love a good movie! Thanks for all your comments they make me smile(: P.S. I still hate Water!!

If You Like Peanut Butter...

There is a healthy peanut butter at Whole Foods (the store formerly known as Wild Oats) called "Better'n Peanut Butter." It contains 2 g. fat and 100 calories per serving (2 Tbsp.) versus 16 g. fat and 190 calories in regular peanut butter. Yeah. Ingredients: peanuts (as defatted peanut flour, peanut butter and natural peanut oils), pure water, tapioca syrup, rice syrup, vegetable glycerine, dehydrated cane juice, tapioca starch, natural colors and flavors, salt, calcium carbonate, lechithin, toccopherol (vitamin E), sodium ascorbate (vitamin C).

I love to spread this on whole wheat toast - that amazing dense 5 g. of fiber per slice kind - and slice up a banana on top. Delicious treat. 3 points on Weight Watchers, cause I never need the whole 2 Tbsp. serving of peanut butter.

For Janna....

This post is for Janna, I was just looking over your goals...cause im 100% in awe over these workouts you have been pulling out. Lately I have no energy to workout, I'm starting to think im not eating enough. BUUUUUT back to my question...how do you like the Making the Cut diet? Is it hard? Time consuming? and the biggest question....could a picky eater do it? I am seriously considering going and getting the book, just kinda maybe wanted to hear your (or anyone else that may have done it) thoughts on it. Thanks!!
Hello everyone! I'm Kris! I have one daughter Savanah who is 14 years old. I have been married to Jeremy for 10 years. I am a Pre-K / Kindergarten Teacher. I have worked with children for about 15 years...... I love being able to be a kid everyday! I love to write poems, songs and children stories. My goal for this game is to feel better about myself and improve my health. Oh and let me add WIN THE MONEY! Ha ha ha ........ My partner Colleen is my mom! She is such a great person and I am so lucky to have her as my mom. I love you!

Lori

Well I know most of you know me but for Jodi's friends that don't here goes: I am Lori Goudie, middle sis to Kelly and Jodi, aunt to Em, sister in law to Keith and Brad. Kristin, Tiffany and Laureen are in my ward. Laureen teaches my 16 year old piano. My 15 year old does gymnastics with daughters of Kris, Michele, Jodi O. and Trudy. I have 4 kids, 21, 16, 15 and 10. My 21 year old is getting married in 7 weeks (one of my goals to lose weight - pictures - ugh!) I have TWO teenage daughters (help!) actually they are all great kids. I work full time for BXBS insurance comapany and have been there 29 years. I sell Avon. I clean my daughters gymnastics place twice a week. I love scrappin! I am very busy! I love reading everyones blogs and getting to know everyone!

Getting to know me..

Hi ya'll! It sounds like everyone is doing good! I have to say, I do feel better this week and I am getting into a routine daily which helps me with my busy schedule and making all my goals.
What a great idea Em to tell a little about ourselves.
I am Lori & Jodi E. older sis, and Em's mom, and Keith's wife.
I am 48 yrs. and a grandma of 2 (almost 3).
I am a mom/baby R.N. I love crafts! Infact, I am in a craft fair this week.
You all are invited to come. It is in a home located at: 4348 S. Alice Way (3020 W.). It starts thursday March 25th, goes friday and saturday. The hours are from 10-6. I will be there friday from 9-noon, and would love to meet you all!
I am excited to see and feel the results of being healthy! It is hard, but I try and remind myself that it will be worth it!!
Only 30 more pounds to go (at this point anyway;)).

Exercise

On good morning america this morning they had a Dr. on that said as women get older they need at least an hour of exercise 7 days a week to maintain their weight. If you want to lose weight you need to exercise more than an hour. No wonder the 20 minutes doesn't cut it!!! At least for us old folk!

High in flavonoids, which are lauded for their relaxing properties (chamomiletea is another great source), chocolate also contains phenethylamine, a chemical that enhances your mood. The darker the chocolate, the more healthy substances you're getting in your diet, so look for bars that are 70 percent cacao or higher.

    Skim Milk

Turns out that a glass of warm milk really is calming. One study found that women who drank four or more servings of lowfat or skim milk every day were about half as likely to experience stress-related PMS symptoms than those who drank less than one serving a week.

    Oatmeal

Carbs help you produce serotonin, a calming hormone that helps fight anxiety's negative effects-which is probably why many of us crave them when we're stressed. Go with the craving and choose healthy sources. Oatmeal is high in fiber, which means that your body will absorb it slowly. In one fell swoop, you'll prolong the serotonin boost, keeping yourself feeling full for longer (and on less) and making sure your blood sugar's in check.

    Salmon

Research shows that omega-3 fatty acids-abundant in fish like salmon-can help reverse stress symptoms by boosting serotonin levels, and that an omega-3-rich diet can also help suppress the production of the anxiety hormones cortisol and adrenaline.

    Walnuts

They've been shown to help lower blood pressure, which is critical for those whose hearts are already working overtime thanks to high adrenaline levels. In fact, research so strongly backs their health benefits that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration goes so far as to recommend 1 1/2 oz per day.

    Sunflower Seeds

A good source of folate, which helps your body produce a pleasure-inducing brain chemical called dopamine.

    Spinach

Studies show that magnesium, which you'll find in leafy greens like spinach, improves your body's response to stress.

    Blueberries

Their antioxidants counteract the effects of stress hormones like cortisol on your body.

    Struggling....

Not entirely sure why this is so hard for me. Zero energy to work out. All I want is chocolate. Reading my scriptures somehow always gets pushed to as im laying in bed right before I go to sleep...clearly not the best way to get the most (or anything) out of them. Worst part...its not even PMS. No real excuse, other than a good 'ole funk. Good news is, I CAN DO THIS!
Hi everyone.... hope you are all doing well.

    PLEASE READ!

I just had Jodi O. call me and she thought maybe some of you were confused as she was. I hope you all know that you weigh in every friday morning. Not thursday nights and friday mornings. Therefore you may notice that I had to change their score. She thought you weigh on friday morning for the beginning weight and then thursday night for the end of the week weight. So since she weighed on friday morning she really lost her weight so I changed her score to reflect that. Hope no one else is confused.

    kids workout

I ended up incorporating my kids into my workouts today. My daughter who's almost 3 did some of my new boot camp dvd then ran circles around me while I finished it. Then I
rode the stationary bike, my 4 month old started fussing so I held her for 15 or 20 min. Made me feel I was strengthening my arms and back in the process. I feel pretty good, we'll see how I feel tomorrow ;)

    Getting Tired

    Yesterday:
Woke up, took my dog for an hour walk.
Went to work, went for 7 mile run.
Went to the gym, did 75 minutes on the elliptical machine.
Came home, took my dog for an hour walk.

    Today:
Woke up, took my dog for an hour walk.
Got home from work, went for a 50 mile bike ride.
Later, take my dog for an hour walk.

I'm worn out. And I get to do it all over again tomorrow.

Kevin Bacon and Avoiding Bacon Grease in General

Is it EM who suggested introducing ourselves? Good idea. NOT the annoying girl in class. My Kevin Bacon connection to Lori is: A) I am her neighbor, in her ward; B) I am her daughter's piano teacher; C) We have either visit taught together or she has been my visiting teacher; D) We are in fierce competition for ca$h.

I really have nothing to say about bacon grease, except....don't.

And finally, somebody last week mentioned stretch marks. Today, in my inbox, was a newsletter from a great website - LIVESTRONG. And there was an article about avoiding stretch marks when you're losing weight! The link is below.

    http://www.livestrong.com/article/31082

Good news about being sick: all food tastes like sand, and you eat less of it. Bad news about being sick: what comes out of your nose is biblical. Except for, wait. Maybe that will pay off at the scale...

    A Good Reminder on Snacking

Believe it or not, snacks can actually strengthen your calorie-counting efforts. Simply making a healthy snack choice could keep you happier and more successful with your diet.

“If you go too long without eating, you are hungrier than you would be without a snack,” says Catherine Bethea Dempsey, RD, LD, dietitian and research coordinator at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Starve yourself and you are likely to overcompensate at your next meal, warns Dempsey, adding, “A 150-calorie snack will save you more than that at dinner.”

    Calorie Counting and Snacks

There are a few rules to follow if you want this snack strategy to work:

    • Count the calories in those snacks. You have to include the calorie count of each snack in your total calorie count. Seems like a no-brainer, but it’s easy to forget about a handful of pretzels or nuts here and there.
    • Be picky. You shouldn’t snack on just anything — you still want to find healthy, diet-friendly options.
    • Plan ahead. "Know thyself" is a motto to follow. Expecting that you’ll be hungry and figuring out what to eat ahead of time will make you more successful when hunger strikes. If you tend to get ravenously hungry in the mid-afternoon, be ready for a snack attack.

    Best Snacks for Your Diet

Dempsey suggests snacks that offer “a bit of fat, carbohydrates, and protein.” This combination is likely to help ward off hunger longer, making it a smart use of calories. Her specific recommendations include:

    • Yogurt and fruit
    • A very small handful of nuts — it’s easy to get carried away with nuts, which are healthy but pack a calorie wallop
    • Low-fat cottage cheese and fruit
    • Sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, cottage cheese, and low-fat salad dressing — Dempsey’s personal favorite
    • Fruit slices or chunks topped with a tablespoon of peanut butter

    Best Vending Machine Snacks

It’s almost inevitable that one day you will find yourself with no option but to faint from hunger or put your dollar in a vending machine. Have no fear — you can still make a choice that will not ruin your calorie counting.

“The best thing is to get a bottle of water and a granola bar,” says Dempsey. Almost every vending machine offers granola bars, but if you are faced with one that doesn’t, choose pretzels over chips, Dempsey advises.

Tempting as chocolate might be, avoid it. High-sugar snacks will simply put you back in the cycle of sugar highs and lows, which means that kind of snack won’t help you hold off hunger for long. The peanuts or almonds in some candies may be good for you, but they don’t make up for the total damage.

Though it doesn’t offer any nutrition, that old standard, sugarless gum, may be a good choice. A recent study of 115 adults showed that those who chewed sugarless gum about once an hour for three hours between lunch and a mid-afternoon snack ate 40 fewer calories in snacks than those who did not chew gum.

The bottom line on snacks: Making the right choices can keep your calorie counting and weight-loss goals on track.

    Endorphins!

OK, so I love the feeling I get after working out! It puts me in such a good mood. I've learned tonight, not to go shopping afterwards because I'm so happy and relaxed that I tend to spend more than I should. :) Good luck to everyone else, keep up the good work! I love reading other's comments.

    More Holy Water

I think I'm going to agree with Kristin - all that water is helping the exercise and healthy eating. 6.7 pounds and counting. :)

    Suggestion?

I was wondering if maybe everyone could kinda introduce themselves? Maybe your connection to Lori/Jodi? I see you guys post and enjoy reading it, just wish I had something to connect it to other than just a name. Is this dumb? Am I that annoying girl in class? Maybe, oh well :) I'll go ahead and start...

I'm Emily (obviously). Jodi and Lori's favorite neice. 25. Daughter of Keith and Kelly. Graduated from the U in business. Social Butterfly. Likes running (most days) and LOVES hiking. Decided to do this to learn healthy habits since I am quickly seeing my metabolism slow down and cant live off Wendy's fries and frostys anymore....aaaaaand who doesnt love a little healthy competition! :)

The best part about running is....

the finish line. I wanted to die this morning, but when I got back to my house I felt great. Because it was over.

    Sugar

I went all week without any sugar, and today when I decided I was going to have a free meal I seriously debated if I should just stay away from it. I didnt want the "withdrawls" to come back. Gave in, and it was bliss. Totally worth having it again! Yay for free meals!

Can't wait to see what week 2 brings!

    weekend fun

I think having my free day and free meal on the weekend is going to work for me...that way come Monday, it's back to business. we'll see how this week goes.
I ran the stairs at the high school last night and just started feeling it tonight

    TMI

Here is a TMI question: Does anyone know anyway to get rid of stretch marks? I have some really bad ones I want to get rid of.

    Tired of Being Sick

It really hurts to drink water when you have a sore throat. I should get extra points. At least I get 5 points for this pathetic post. waaaaaah. Call the waaaaaamulance.
The nest three days are going to be stressful.... I have three days of testing yuk! I like to eat chocolate when I am stressed...this isgoing to be hard.
I have been using the Biggest Loser Family Cookbook and let me tell you it's great! If you haven't seen it go get it.... I am a very picky eater and I have not found one thing I don't like plus I know how many calories I'm eating every time.

    belly fat!

I will be going off the HCG this week and so I was looking around to find what diet I will follow. I have a lot of belly fat so I found this great book that I will follow for the next 4 weeks to see how it goes. It is called Jorge Cruise, 8 minutes in the morning to a flat belly. It looks really good and healthy. If any of you want to check it out, got to www.jorgecruise.com. I will do the 8 minute workout every morning and then go for my 1/2-hour walk after that. I am excited to see how it works! I have the book if anyone is interested in looking at it.

    Free Day

I'm taking my free day today. I'm kind of afraid to eat anything sweet. My body has been on sugar detox all week and I don't want to be craving sweets again like I was the first three days. I may have to skip on the sugar ): I must admit my ideal meal is chocolate chip cookies and Diet coke. I was at the temple yesterday, my friend was being sealed to her husband and 2 kids and the sealer said something that really hit home "The only person in this world you have the power to change is yourself." He was speaking of trying to change your spouse. Me and my husband are always sabotaging eachother like it's so much easier to have someone to be fat with. This week was really good for me because I knew I was going to have to be accountable to someone outside my comfort zone.

    Saturday, March 20, 2010

Thank heavens for the free meal. It was such a treat!

    Surviving!

I hope everyone is surviving the weekend. I thought I would answer a question that came up about fasting since fast sunday is coming up for those of you that fast. You do not have to use fast sunday as your free day. You can fast and only eat your one healthy meal and probably get in a healthy snack or two also. Just count your full 30 points for those days. Any other questions don't hesistate to ask. You may also find your answers to questions by re-reading the rules or previous blogs. Have a great night!

    Coke

I really wanted a coke this morning but I just said "No."

    Week 1 was a Weak 1

Ya'll had great scores this week! Mine was not as strong as I would have liked, but the challenge is fun. Thanks for setting the bar high.

    Good job!

Good job everyone! I'm happy to see so many awesome scores...keep it up!
The Biggest Loser Cookbook has some great recipes! I ate a Hula Pizza for dinner. It was great!
Great job everyone! One week down.... seven to go!
    Janna 760 points. Yeah!!

    Holy Water part 2

I hate to admit it ,but I think drinking water this week is what made me lose weight. I did cut out sweets except for my free day and meal ,but I was already excercising. So I guess this is my motivation to keep gagging it down.

    Weak Link

Dang stomach flu thingy. Makes it a bit hard to get points :( Good news is, there is room for improvement!

    Luck next week?

I didn't have a perfect week which would have been nice but hard for me since a lot of these habits are very new to me but it just makes me want to try even harder this week! Good job to all of you who had perfect weeks or close to it! Keep up the good work and good luck this week!

Great First Week for Tiff and Laureen

    Tiffany - 695 pts.
    Laureen - 760 pts.

    Total - 1505 pts.

Great first week. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Keep moving. Steady she goes......DOWN!

    Yeah!

I was almost perfect. I lost 3.6 and that is with the lovely monthly starting today. I had to take a 10 point penalty for tasting one bite of a fried pickle! (I had to try it, I have never tried one before) When posting your scores, could you please give me both team mates scores instead of just the total for both. thanks!
    Brad 740 points
    Jodi 760 points

    points for me

It's a good thing I didn't take a off day this week! I just barely made my 1%.... maybe next week will be easier. My points were 760. They didn't come easy! :)

    Thursday, March 18, 2010

Jodi and I had a pretty good week. Our team score this week is 1470.

    Good Luck!!

I hope everyone feels good about their success this week. Make sure to post scores by noon tomorrow.

    No more diet coke

This first week has been fun! I have noticed that having goals set definitely has helped me to stay on track. It has also been helpful to read all of your blogs and know that we all are feeling the same way! I have noticed that not having diet coke has made me drink more H2O.

Keith says: Getting off the Diet Coke has made a world of difference! I have been sleeping better and feel better.
This was a tough week.... Hope next week goes a little easier to stay on track, my points for the week is 650

    AM excercise

I've been excercising before my kids wake-up and I love it!! There is something about being up before anyone. It's quiet and peaceful. Two things that are greatly lacking in my world:)

What Dorothy Has Learned This Week...

Whenever I've been sick before, I have always felt like I had a note from home for not exercising, and have taken the day(s) off guilt-free. But these points, you see...In spite of feeling lousy (you should hear me sing "Ol' Man River" - it is a freakish thing of beauty), I have dragged my sorry self down to the Caves of Mordor (aka my basement) and got on my treadmill for 20 minutes. Turns out, I did not die because of this extreme measure. And, at the risk of sounding like Martha Stewart, I feel compelled to say, "It's a good thing."

    Posting your scores!

Just wanted to remind everyone I need your scores posted by noon tomorrow. You can either do it as a team or individually. I always called my sis and asked for her points and put them on together that way I made sure we both got the bonus points. Do not put the scores in the section that says teams under week 1, I will update it there when I get all the points. Good luck everyone!!!!

    Ingredients:
1/4 cup fat-free cream cheese, room temperature
2 wedges The Laughing Cow Light Original Swiss cheese
    4 oz. imitation crabmeat, flaked
    1 tsp. low-sodium/lite soy sauce
    1/2 tsp. chopped garlic
    2 scallions, finely chopped

Optional: sweet & sour sauce or Chinese-style hot mustard, for dipping

    Directions:
    Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

To make your filling, combine all ingredients except wonton wrappers in a bowl, breaking up the cheese wedges as you add them. Mix until uniform. Set aside. Spray a baking sheet with nonstick spray and set that aside as well.

Lay two wrappers flat on a clean, dry surface. Spoon a heaping 1/2 tbsp. of filling into the center of each wrapper. Moisten all four edges of each wrapper by dabbing your fingers in water and going over the edges smoothly. Fold the bottom left corner of each wrapper to meet the top right corner, forming a triangle and enclosing the filling. Press firmly on the edges to seal. Repeat with all remaining wrappers and filling, gently placing each rangoon flat on the baking sheet.

Spray the tops of the wontons with nonstick spray. Bake in th e oven for about 12 minutes, carefully flipping halfway through, until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly.

If you like, dip your rangoonies in some sweet & sour sauce or hot mustard!

    Dreamy PB Chocolate Ravioli Puffs

    PER SERVING (4 "ravioli puffs"): 157 calories, 4.5g fat, 242mg sodium, 25g carbs, 1.5g fiber, 2g sugars, 5g protein -- POINTS® value 3*

Sweet pillows of desserty goodness! This recipe's a delicious and guilt-free way to satisfy your urge for PB & C (peanut butter and chocolate). Heads up: These need to freeze for an hour before being cooked!

    Ingredients:
2 Mousse Temptations by Jell-O snack cups, Dark Chocolate Decadence or Chocolate Indulgence
2 tbsp. reduced-fat creamy peanut butter, room temperature
16 small square wonton wrappers (often stocked near the tofu i n the fridge section of the market)
1/4 cup Fat Free Reddi-wip, divided
    Optional: powdered sugar

    Directions:
To make the filling, gently swirl together mousse and peanut butter in a bowl -- don't over-stir, but make sure PB is evenly distributed. Set aside.

Set out a wide plastic container (or a few mid-sized ones), and make sure you've got room in your freezer.

Lay two wonton wrappers flat on a clean, dry surface. Spoon a little less than 1 tbsp. filling into the center of each wrapper. Moisten all four edges of each wrapper by dabbing your fingers in water and going over the edges smoothly. Fold the bottom left corner of each wrapper to meet the top right corner, forming a triangle and enclosing the filling. Using your fingers or the prongs of a fork, press firmly on the edges to seal.

Repeat with all remaining wrappers and filling, placing each raviolo flat in the container(s). (Yup, that's really the singular form of "ravioli!") Freeze for 1 hour.

Bring a large skillet sprayed with nonstick spray to medium heat. Working in batches, place frozen ravioli flat in the skillet, evenly spaced, and cook for 2 - 3 minutes, until slightly puffy. Flip carefully and cook for an additional 1 - 2 minutes (no longer). Don't flip them again, as the filling may ooze out!

Allow to cool slightly. If you like, sprinkle with a small amount of powdered sugar. Then top each serving with a tbsp. of Reddi-wip and enjoy!
