We talk about listening to the still small voice sometimes, the voice of our Maker that helps us, guides us, urges us upward. But there's another still small voice inside - the voice of the thing that the Maker made - our bodies. There are so many distractions to keep us from listening to the engine that God gave us to navigate through this life. But if we can tune into THAT voice, listen to what our bodies need, give them what they ask for, it makes it so much easier to listen to the still small Voice.
I woke up at 6:30 - plenty of sleep. But it was dark! And I didn't want to get up yet. As I lay there, I realized that I didn't want to get up yet - out of sheer habit, but my body wanted to get up! It was finished sleeping! So the next thing that I did was amazing.
I got up (I know. Where will it end?)
Stretched. Started on the water (duh!). Went to the gym. Pushed myself just a little bit (sometimes that body is like a child that needs a parent, too, you know?). The day has begun....well, because I listened!
It starts with listening. Getting up when you'd rather not. Filing away in your brain: ooh, chocolate chip cookies sound good - just not today. I can go faster, or farther today on my workout. Or not.
And then, as we master these stupid little impulses of indulgence, we can listen to a higher Voice: "Don't say that." "Call so-and-so." "Your kid needs you today." "Don't think that." And on the refining goes.
This contest is teaching me to master dumb easy stuff like getting out of bed, and slowly, but surely, it's teaching me to master harder stuff like holding my tongue, refining my thoughts. I'm off to my happy tomatoes and toast - good morning to all!
